Pet Ultrasound

A non-invasive way to diagnose sick & injured pets.

We offer point-of-care (POCUS) veterinary ultrasounds for pets. Much like ultrasound for people, pet ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique used to diagnose sick and injured animals.

We are not equipped for full diagnostic ultrasound like what is used by internal medicine specialists, cardiologists, critcal care medicine teams, etc. If a full diagnostic ultrasound is recommended by your veterinarian, we recommend referral to the speciality hospitals in Portland--either Maine Veterinary Medical Center or Portland Veterinary Specialists to recieve this more in-depth type of imaging.

How does ultrasound work?

When the sound waves penetrate the body, they “bounce” back. The ultrasound machine measures the time it takes for a sound wave to bounce back and creates an image.

What conditions can be diagnosed by ultrasound?

Some injuries and conditions that can be identified with our ultrasound include:

  • Bladder and kidney stones, gall stones
  • Internal Bleeding
  • Pregnancy
  • Medium to large cysts and tumors depending on location
  • Certain Heart conditions--pericardial effusion, some heart tumors
  • Fluid around the lungs or heart
  • Fluid build-up in the abdomen

Ultrasound also allows us to safely collect fluid samples without having to perform invasive surgeries.

If your pet is showing signs of illness or injury, call us at (207) 777-1110 to pre-register. We are a walk-in only clinic and do not make appointments.  Our ultrasound may be able to assist in diagnosing the problem.
